5G Barcelona

We are proud of announcing that A&MSP department is going to participate in the 5G Barcelona initiative. This initiative aims to be the first 5G european digital hub, where 5G technologies are going to emerge. Thanks to this, Barcelona is going to become a leading player in the development of 5G technology at European level and lead both the design and testing of this new evolution of mobile broadband internet connection.

With this initiative, the A&MSP department is going to participate in the areas of Coded Caching techniques for hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications.

Coded Caching techniques for hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications

5G is going to provide the solution for many scenarios by slicing the network with vertical services and adapting the whole architecture to the particular needs of customers. One of the main goals of 5G era is the convergence between terrestrial and satellite communications.

Coded Caching techniques for hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications are a special candidate to deploy fast networks in rural areas, where the terrestrial coverage may be insufficient to bring the future to these areas. With these techniques, the network load is reduced drastically and, thus, the user experience is boosted to new limits.

Pol Henarejos

Pol Henarejos received the Telecommunication Engineering degree from the Telecommunication Engineering High School from Barcelona (ETSETB) of Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in May 2009. In 2012, he obtained the Master of Science in Research on Information and Communication Technologies from UPC. In 2017, he obtained the Ph.D. degree from UPC, with a distinction Cum Laude. He joined the CTTC in January 2010 in Engineering area and he worked prototyping the physical layer communication technologies using software development. He is an expert in terrestrial and satellite technologies, such as LTE, 5G-NR, DVB-S2X, BGAN or Li-Fi. He is the Principal Investigator of Horizon Europe TRANTOR project. He also participated in European projects such as PHYDYAS, FANTASTIC-5G, ATRIA and TRANTOR, in European Space Agency programs (Satnex III, Satnex IV, Satnex V, SATAI) and with industrial contracts. He is also the promoter of the CASTLE Platform, a cloudified architecture for hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks. Currently he is researching on the development of new Artificial Intelligence algorithms for satellite communications, implementation of physical stack of many standards and enabling 5G and beyond technologies on flexible multicast and broadcast communications.
